Botox
Treatment with Botox is a highly popular method of softening facial expression lines and making the face look refreshed. Every time we frown, squint or smile the skin is creased in the areas of greatest use. The more expressive you are the deeper the lines become. As we age, collagen production slows down and the problem accelerates as we are less able to repair the damage.
How does it work?
The treatment works by relaxing the tiny facial muscles that create expression lines. This means the muscles no longer contract so the overlying skin stays smooth and crease free causing any lines to soften and fade away. The result is a more serene and youthful look.
Is it safe?
Botox has been used for numerous medical conditions since the 1970’s. The cosmetic benefits were discovered in 1990 and it has been used effectively and safely worldwide ever since.
Who performs the injections at Olive Dental Care?
Botox is a prescription only medicine(POM) in UK, and hence can be offered only after a consultation with a medical doctor or dentist. Some registered nurses can prescribe Botox, but only after completing NMC Independent Nurse Prescribing Course (also known as v200 or v300 courses). The practitioner will also need to have indemnity insurance to cover themselves for medical malpractice claims.
At Olive Dental Care, the treatment is performed by Dr Biju Philip who is a medical doctor.
What happens during treatment?
The procedure is simple and straightforward. The treatment involves injecting very small doses of the Botox into the appropriate areas. Normal activity can be resumed immediately after the procedure. After two to three days, the effects can be seen with full benefits becoming visible up to seven days after treatment. The results last for around three to six months before repeat treatments are required.
Does Botox® treatment hurt?
The injections are relatively painless and administered expertly by our fully qualified practitioner in safe clinical surroundings.
Are there any side effects?
No serious side effects have ever been reported when using the wrinkle reduction treatments for cosmetic reasons. Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling and redness which subsides within a few days. Bruising at the injection site may occur, this can be covered with make-up if needed.
Are there any contraindications?
We cannot offer Botulinum toxin injections if you are younger than 18 years of age (unless it is for specific indications).
There is no clinical evidence suggesting that having Botox is unsafe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, but it is sensible practice not to inject a toxin in pregnant and breast feeding women just in case something happens to the baby.
Which areas can be treated?
The three facial zones that can be treated are frown lines, lines on the forehead and lines on the sides of the eyes often called “crows feet or smile lines.”
Other areas treated are upper lips for “smokers lines”, arm pits and hands for sweating. Botulinum Toxin is highly effective to manage excessive sweating from arm pits.
