Digital impressions explained
Traditional impressions
For many years, the only way to take an impression for fabricating crowns, bridges and implants was using sticky messy material inserted into the mouth to obtain a mould of the area.
The disadvantage of traditional impression technique
Most patients find this uncomfortable, and many patients with a strong gag reflux struggle with this procedure.
Gagging during the procedure leads to inaccurate impressions leading to a repeat of the procedure. This procedure is also a major cause of dental anxiety in patients.
What is meant by digital impression?
Digital impressions represent cutting-edge technology that allows dentists to create a virtual, computer-generated replica of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth using a 3D laser camera. The digital technology captures clear and highly accurate impression data in mere minutes, without the need for traditional impression materials that some patients find inconvenient and messy.
What are the advantages of digital impressions?
- Digital impressions are more accurate than traditional impressions.
- No need to use the rubbery distasteful impression materials that cause some patients to gag
- More comfort and less anxiety for the patient
- Less possibility of errors, and hence avoids the need for repeat impressions
- The impressions are stored electronically-saving space and contributes to efficient record keeping
- Avoids the need for plastic impression trays and hence greener for the environment
- Save on posting the impression to the lab – hence more eco-friendly
